"Simon’s latest volume elaborates on a long year of radical changes,during which the ethnic Hungarian populationof the Felvidék region found itself in a minoritysituation, as opposed to its former majorityposition, gradually giving up its emotional resis-tance to the new Czechoslovak state, assuminga stance of “pragmatic acceptance”. In Simon’s opinion, a major contributing factorin this respect must have been a longing for sta-bility after a long period of uncertainty."
